Skying

The probable cause of this faulty tee shot is returning the clubface back to impact in a severely closed or shut face condition. Check your grip and your takeaway. The fault in the takeaway is that you are keeping the clubface looking at the ball for far too long going back. By doing this the face is already closed and if you keep this condition till impact there is your sky shot. Understanding that the clubface has its own rotation during the swing is a fundamental feature in the feel of a real golf swing. On the backswing all the clubface rotation occurs between the ball and waist high. In the downswing the rotation starts with the club back down at waist high, continues through the ball and stops when it is waist high on the follow through. The same swing that skies tee shots will play smothered shots from shots played down the fairway.
